沖合は黒潮の流れる太平洋に面し沖合の海岸線はリアス式海岸で今でも荒波により浸食がすすんでいます。高山海岸はゴツゴツとした小石の海岸ですぐ隣にある元猿海岸は砂の海岸と一風変わった海岸で夏場は多くの海水浴客で賑わいます。元猿海岸は日豊海岸国定公園に指定され平成8年の日本の渚100選に選定されています。また海岸線の堤防にはハマユウとハイビスカスが植えられ7月から11月頃まで花を楽しむことが出来ます。
