I grew up in Fairfax, Virginia, son of a birdbander and Federal government worker. I graduated from Fairfax High School, the College of William and Mary (BS, Biology, 1968), and University of Connecticut (MS, Zoology, 1974). I spent 2 years in the US Army (1969 - 1971), one year of which was in Japan, where I was introduced in high speed trains (130 miles/hour). I also spent a year in Venezuela (1966 - 1967) where I worked as a contractor for the Smithsonian Institution, collecting mammals, ectoparasites, and blood viruses. On Jan 3, 2013, after 39 years, I retired from the Federal government (Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Pesticide Programs) where I regulated vertebrate pesticides and insecticides. Since October 2009, I have taken a special interest in promoting passenger rail in Virginia, in part by posting videos made with the Power Director and posted on YouTube.
