蒲原は、安藤広重の版画「東海道五十三次　蒲原・夜の雪」で知られる通りかっては江戸から１５番目の宿場でした。狭い平地に国道１号線、ＪＲ東海道本線が走っており、地域とこれらを守るためスーパー堤防が築かれています。ただ、海岸の侵食が激しく堤防も危うくなり、離岸堤の設置工事が継続的に進められています。
