Swaledale and the surrounding Dales had a thriving lead ore mining industry, much of which is now nothing but ruins. An example of this industrial work is the old smelt works of Surrender in Swaledale North Yorkshire England. This smelt mills records go back to as early as the late 1600's and was worked until 1882 when it stopped smelting ore I have to apologise for the quality of some of the clips, I had a nighmare with exposure and really should have left a few clips out.
