TUG OF WAR PAUL MC CARTNEY Tug of War is the third studio album by Paul McCartney, released by Parlophone in April 1982. Preceded by McCartney II, Tug of War is McCartney's first solo album following the official disbandment of Wings in April 1981. The recording sessions for the album reunited McCartney with producer George Martin for the first time since the dissolution of The Beatles, and took place following the murder of John Lennon, his former Beatles bandmate, on December 8, 1980. In March 1982, Paul McCartney's duet with Stevie Wonder, "Ebony and Ivory", was released as the album's lead single and achieved unanimous success. The song reached the top of the charts in several countries and was critically acclaimed, helping McCartney restore his musical reputation in the eyes of the specialized critics after a period of minor success. Tug of War was released a month later and became an immediate worldwide hit, reaching number one on both the UK and US charts. In addition to critical success, Tug of War was also a bestseller, selling several million copies worldwide and being certified over the years platinum in the United States by the RIAA and gold in the United Kingdom. A second single, "Take It Away", was released in June 1982, which achieved similar success on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1983, Tug of War became McCartney's first work to receive five Grammy Award nominations, including album of the year, and won two Brit Awards in the categories of Best British Male Artist and Technical Excellence.
